Matt has taught English and coached football at Phillips Exeter Academy since 2007. He earned his BA from Yale University where he played varsity football, his MFA in Creative Writing and Literature from Emerson College, and is currently studying creative nonfiction at The Bennington Writing Seminars. A former Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University and a Walter E. Dakin Fellow at The Sewanee Writers Conference, he is the author of the award winning collectionsTender the River, The Wounded for the Water, Club Icarus, and Cameo Diner: Poems. He has published poems and essays in Birmingham Poetry Review, Harvard Review, Narrative Magazine, Notre Dame Review, Southwest Review, 32 Poems, and The Rumpus, among other journals. He srves as facuoty for the Poetry by the Sea Conference and was winner of the River Styx Microfiction Prize, Iron Horse Review's Trifecta Poetry Prize, and the Pablo Neruda Prize. At Exeter, he teaches courses in Documentary Poetics, Moby Dick, Toni Morrison, Novel Into Film, and The Harlem Renaissance. He lives with his family in Exeter and spends his free time surfing the chilly Atlantic.
