Hassanal Abdullah is a poet, novelist, critic, translator and the editor of Shabdaguchha, an International Bilingual Poetry Magazine. He has introduced a new sonnet form, Swatantra Sonnet, with seven-line stanza-pattern and abcdabc efgdefg rhyming scheme. He also wrote a 304-page epic on Human Beings and the Universe and how life is connected to the outer space using almost all the major scientific theories and evolutionary understanding. He is an author of 40 books in different genres and a New York City High School Math teacher since 1998. He received the Homer European Medal for Poetry (2016), Lebubhai Foundation Award (2013) and attended the Silk Road International Poetry Festival in China (2016). Besides English, his poetry has also been translated into French, Spanish, Chinese and Korean, Vietnamese, and Polish. In 2015, Mr. Abdullah was a feature for the Seventh Quarry, a Poetry Magazine from England, which published his interview and his sonnets in translation. In its February 2016, 'Anubhuti’, a Dhaka based poetry magazine, published its entire issue on Hassanal Abdullah’s work. Last year, his 50th Birthday was celebrated in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by the Birthday Celebration Committee, and in Gopalganj, the city he was born. Hassanal Abdullah: Poet Voyager (Puthiniloy, 2017), a 240-page book was published on his work to mark the poet's 50th Birthday. Apart from Bengali, his three bilingual poetry collections, Breath of Bengal (CCC, 2000), Under the Thin Layers of Light (CCC, 2015) and Swatantra Sonnet: Bengali with English Translation by the Author (Feral Press, 2017) were published from New York, and are available at amazon.com and spdbooks.org. In Mass Poetry Festival 2017, he ran a seminar on how to write Swatantra Sonnets.
